You're probably aware of dental veneers, but just how do they work? What are dental veneers, exactly? Back in 2006, over half a million Americans had veneers, and that figure has almost certainly increased in the years since, so it's clearly a popular procedure.

If you'd like the lowdown on the dental veneers process, keep reading on!

What Are Dental Veneers?

Simply put, dental veneers are thin, enamel-covered shells made to cover the front of your teeth to improve their appearance. If your teeth are stained or chipped, you might decide to go with veneers, though it's a big decision as they bond firmly to your teeth. They're one of a number of cosmetic dentistry services we offer here.

Porcelain or Resin - the Difference

Veneers for teeth can be either porcelain or resin, and there are a few minor differences between the two materials. Often, porcelain veneers are a better option because they are more stain-resistant and reflect light in a manner similar to natural teeth.

However, it's always best to discuss with your dentist in order to work out which type of veneer is best for you.

What Problems Can Veneers Fix?

The great thing about teeth veneers is that they're pretty adaptable, and can fix a range of problems — here are just a few:

  • Discoloration — there are many reasons as to why your teeth might be discolored, such as previous root canal treatment, medication, or resin fillings
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Teeth with large gaps — veneers can reduce the gaps to improve appearance
  • Uneven or misaligned teeth

If you have a small cosmetic problem involving your teeth, it makes sense to look into getting veneers, as they can really help you out!

Just how are dental veneers made? The process is a little different depending on the material used, as resin-composite veneers can often require just one appointment. However, that's not the case with porcelain veneers.

When you go back for your second visit, your dentist will take a small amount — about half a millimeter — of tooth enamel in preparation for the veneers to be placed. They'll then make a model or impression of your teeth , which will be sent off to a laboratory so your veneers can be prepared. This step usually takes around a couple of weeks.

Your third trip to the dentist is the big one — you'll be getting those new veneers. Your dentist will check the fit and color of the veneers, and prepare your teeth by cleaning and then roughing up the surface.

When the veneers are attached, they'll bond to your teeth with a special cement before an ultraviolet light is used to harden the cement quickly. Once your dentist makes any last-minute adjustments and checks everything over, you're good to go — y
